On July 22, 2019, Jaydeep Rajeshkumar Thanki, an Indian national working for Kenmatch East Africa Ltd, reported to police that he was robbed Sh10.5 million at gunpoint while driving along Prof Wangari Maathai Road in Nairobi.
Thanki claimed that a motorcyclist and his passenger flagged him down, drew out a pistol, and demanded that he surrender a bag containing the money.
However, detectives investigating the case discovered that Thanki had taken two hours to report the alleged robbery, which raised suspicion given its proximity to the Parklands Police Station.
Further investigation revealed that Thanki had only collected Sh3.25 million from his clients, an amount he had already banked.
On July 25, 2019, Thanki was charged in a Nairobi Court for giving false information to a police officer, information he knew to be false.
He denied the charge and was released on a cash bail of Sh200,000. The case was fixed for hearing on September 17, 2019.
