On July 25, 2019, the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) appointed Mamo B Mamo as acting director general, replacing Geoffrey Wahungu who is embroiled in the Sh63 billion Kerio dams scandal.
Wahungu's tenure was marked by controversy, including allegations of overseeing the irregular issuance of environmental assessment approvals for the Kimwarer dam, despite the lack of a feasibility study.
Mr. Mamo, previously the deputy director in charge of environmental education and public participation at Nema, was appointed to the board of directors at the environment agency.
