On July 25, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani as the acting National Treasury CS, replacing Henry Rotich who was arrested on Monday on abuse of office allegations.
Mr Yatani thanked President Kenyatta for putting his trust in him, saying: 'I will continue supporting the president in my new role and working with my colleagues in Cabinet as we steer towards realising a prosperous nation.'
He acknowledged the enormity of the task ahead and the high expectations, but vowed to ensure fiscal soundness of the economy by prioritizing areas that support the government's Big Four agenda and the realization of Vision 2030.
Mr Yatani has a wealth of experience in administration and management, having served as North Horr MP between 2006 and 2009, ambassador to Austria, and Kenya's permanent representative to the United Nations in Vienna.
He also served as Science and Technology assistant minister in former president Mwai Kibaki's government and was elected Marsabit Governor on ODM ticket in 2013.
Locals in Marsabit welcomed his appointment, terming it historical for the pastoralist community. Former nominated member of the County Assembly Ms Lokho Jattani praised President Kenyatta for picking someone from the arid and semi-arid land (ASAL) region.
Ms Jattani expressed optimism in Mr Yatani's capability to handle both the Labour and Treasury dockets, saying he has a vast wealth of experience in administration and management.
