On July 24, 2019, the appointment of Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani as acting Treasury CS sparked mixed reactions in Parliament.
Yattani replaced Henry Rotich, who was arrested on July 22, 2019, and arraigned in court on July 23, 2019, over the multibillion-shilling Kimwarer and Arror dams scandal in Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
Legislators from the Tanga Tanga and Kieleweke groups expressed differing views on the appointment.
Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu expressed confidence in Yattani's ability to perform well, citing the strength of the technical team at the Treasury.
Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, however, urged that the position be filled permanently soon, stating that it is the prerogative of the President to appoint anyone.
Cherengany MP Joshua Kutuny downplayed the significance of the appointment, stating that Yattani is merely an acting CS at the Treasury.
Saku MP Dido Raso praised the President's decision, stating that Yattani's performance at the Labour ministry docket informed the appointment.
