July 24, 2019 - Boris Johnson has been elected as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, following a decisive victory in the Conservative Party leadership election.
With 92,153 votes, Johnson secured a significant lead over his closest rival, Jeremy Hunt, who received 46,656 votes.
Johnson, a 55-year-old former Foreign Secretary and Member of Parliament for Uxbridge and South Ruislip, takes over from Theresa May, who resigned earlier this month due to her failure to deliver Brexit.
In his acceptance speech, Johnson pledged to 'deliver Brexit, unite the country, and defeat Jeremy Corbyn.'
Theresa May congratulated Johnson on his election, stating, 'Many congratulations to @BorisJohnson on being elected leader of @Conservatives - we now need to work together to deliver a Brexit that works for the whole UK and to keep Jeremy Corbyn out of government. You will have my full support from the back benches.'
United States President Donald Trump also congratulated Johnson on his election, tweeting, 'Congratulations to Boris Johnson on becoming the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He will be great!'
