Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has unveiled a new strategy to tackle the city's long-standing garbage issue.
Published on July 24, 2019, Sonko announced that residents can now report uncollected waste to county collectors, who are on standby to respond.
Residents can contact the collectors at 0739555555 or 0722886600, as provided by the governor.
“Wapi takataka leo hamujanitumia. Our environment officers and garbage collectors are on standby. Veska keep it up,” Sonko posted, accompanied by pictures of a fleet of trucks and front shovel bulldozers.
Earlier, Sonko had warned sub-county officials who were not doing their job, allowing garbage to pile up in their constituencies.
He threatened to expose lazy officials to the public and relieve them of their duties if they did not improve.
“Sub county and Ward admins sleeping on their job. Sitakubali handball za ushenzi. Incoming county service board we need your urgent intervention in employing 17 new sub-county and 85 ward admins,” Sonko wrote.
Nairobi's waste disposal system is plagued by major problems, including inadequate infrastructure and a lack of prioritization of solid waste management.
