On July 6, 2019, President Kenyatta and Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli agreed to return a stash of stolen gold during a meeting in Tanzania.
Top Kenyan government officials, including Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monicah Juma, Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji, and Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti, flew to Tanzania with 35.3 kilos of gold worth approximately Sh168 million and handed it over to President Magufuli.
The officials also returned Sh15 million that was recovered from a suspect arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in February 2018.
The stolen gold and money, worth a total of USD77,500, Sh171,600,000, and Tsh170,000,000, were taken from Tanzania's NBC bank in Moshi on May 21, 2004, while staff were locked up in a safe.
President Magufuli praised Kenya's security apparatus for their role in recovering the stolen goods, saying, "The goods were transported from Mwanza. There are many questions to ask, when the goods were being transported, where were Tanzanian security apparatus."
Magufuli also promised to reward the Kenyan security personnel who arrested the suspects before they exported the gold to Dubai.
