On July 24, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta's government delegation traveled to Tanzania to return stolen gold worth Sh100 million that was seized in 2018.
The delegation, led by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma, was welcomed to Tanzania by President John Magufuli.
During a live speech, President Magufuli made a phone call to President Kenyatta to acknowledge the recipient of the gold, but President Kenyatta failed to pick the call twice.
President Magufuli continued with his speech and later returned the call to President Kenyatta.
“Naona Kenyatta ananipigia, kumbe ameshapiga mara mingi,” said Magufuli as he called Kenyatta back.
President Kenyatta eventually addressed the gathering through a phone call on a loudspeaker, and the conversation between the two leaders was met with amusement from those in attendance.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji handed over 35.34 kilograms of gold, TZs 170 million, $77,500, and Sh171,600 to the Tanzanian authorities.
The cash had been in Kenya since 2004, and the gold was recovered at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on February 15, 2018.
