Published on July 24, 2019, a study by CPS Research International has shed light on the preferences of university students in Kenya regarding the electoral college system.
According to the study, a total of 58.9% of the students are satisfied with the current electoral college system, while 41.1% are dissatisfied.
Strathmore University emerged as the most satisfied with the current electoral college system, with a score index of 80%.
The study, which looked at awareness, satisfaction, and constitution of electoral college systems, satisfaction, confidence levels, and issues of national diversity for students' unions in Kenyan universities, found that 85% of the university students were aware of the electoral college system in Kenya.
Furthermore, 56.1% of the students are satisfied with their current students associations' leadership, while 43.9% are not.
The study also indicates that 60.3% of the respondents believe the current students' councils reflect national diversity, while 39.7% think otherwise.
Additionally, 67% of the respondents are satisfied with how universities regulate campaigns, financing, offences, and penalties, while 33% of them were not satisfied.
The study recommends that the students' unions, universities, and key stakeholders should enhance awareness of how the current electoral college system works.
It also recommends that student associations should conduct annual general meetings and students' caucuses to increase transparency in unions.
