On July 23, 2019, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati announced that the Third Way Alliance had collected approximately 1.2 million signatures in support of the Punguza Mzigo campaign.

However, Chebukati clarified that IEBC does not have the legal authority to verify the authenticity of the signatures, but stated that they are valid for registered voters.

The Punguza Mzigo campaign aims to reduce the number of elected officials in Kenya, including MPs, senators, and governors, in an effort to lower the cost of governance.

Key proposals include reducing the number of women representatives, cutting the number of MPs from 349 to 147, and eliminating the positions of deputy governors.

If the bill passes, the next president elected in 2022 would serve a single seven-year term.

The bill is currently seeking support from 24 county assemblies before being presented to parliament and the senate.
