On July 23, 2019, Shoprite announced plans to open its third outlet in Kenya, located at City Mall in Mombasa, just a year after it took over the space previously occupied by Nakumatt.
The South African retailer had initially set the opening for March 2019 but delayed it to August. The new outlet is expected to create 115 new jobs and feature a seating area where customers can enjoy food prepared in the facility.
Shoprite's expansion in Kenya comes as the company gears up to compete with other major retailers, including Naivas, Tuskys, and Carrefour, which have set up shop in some of the country's largest malls.
Naivas, a family-owned store with about 47 branches, is the second-largest Kenyan supermarket chain, while Tuskys, also family-owned, is the largest retailer in Kenya with over 6,000 employees in its more than 60 stores and 900 staff at its seven stores in Uganda.
Shoprite has signaled plans to open two more stores in Kenya this year, one in Karen and another at an undisclosed location.
City Mall proprietor Anish Doshi expressed excitement about Shoprite's upcoming opening, stating, 'City Mall is very excited that Shoprite are now only a few weeks away from opening their very first store in Mombasa and their third store overall in Kenya.'
