On July 23, 2019, Garissa Governor Ali Bunow Korane faced intense questioning by the Senate over corruption allegations.
Despite his initial confidence, Korane appeared powerless and somber as he struggled to answer questions about the misuse of funds and corruption under his leadership.
Some of the key issues that Korane failed to address include:
- Sh276 million was spent on domestic travels, with a member of the County Assembly receiving a Sh5.5 million imprest to attend a devolution meeting, but Korane could not provide documentation.
- Unsupported domestic travel and subsistence expenses, with the auditor finding that only Sh5 million was supported, leaving a balance of Sh15 million unaccounted for.
- Irregular procurement of office and general supplies and services, with Korane using restricted tendering mode without providing a plausible reason, contrary to the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act 2015.
At one point, Korane was forced to retract and apologize for lying to the committee about a completed project, which was contradicted by auditors and an inspection team on the ground.
