Published on July 23, 2019, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has expressed his desire to become the team's captain, as he nears a six-year contract extension.
De Gea, 28, has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford but has stated his commitment to helping the team return to the top of English soccer.
Speaking at a supporters' event in Singapore, De Gea emphasized the importance of the team's captaincy, saying, "I've been captain for some games. Of course, it is amazing to be captain of a club like Manchester United and defend this badge."
De Gea, who has been with the team for nine seasons, believes that the team needs to improve significantly and that he is one of the most experienced players.
"We are Manchester United, we need to fight for trophies," De Gea said. "When you put on this badge, that's what it means — fight for everything, give your best, and bring the team again to the top."
Manchester United, who have not lost a match on their pre-season tour, will face Tottenham Hotspur in Shanghai on Thursday.
