On July 22, 2019, an extraordinary wedding took place in Paka Hills, Baringo County, where an American couple, Trizah and Tony, married in a traditional Pokot ceremony.

Trizah, an American missionary, and her husband Tony, who have lived among the Pokot people for the past decade, decided to wed in adherence to the Pokot traditions.

As part of the ceremony, Trizah underwent female genital mutilation, a rite of passage to adulthood among the Pokot people.

"I am proud to be here and be a part of this. It's a blessing for me to be able to do this and be accepted by these people," Tony told K24 TV in an interview.

Female genital mutilation was banned in Kenya eight years ago after the enactment of the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2011, but communities still practice the vice in secrecy.
