On July 22, 2019, Dennis Itumbi, a digital strategist in President's office, was charged with publishing a letter that made claims of a plot to assassinate Deputy President William Ruto.

The charges were brought before Justice Kennedy Cheruiyot, who also found Itumbi guilty of deleting data on his phone.

Itumbi denied the charges, with the prosecution seeking to have him barred from publishing any information on social media.

However, the court declined to grant the request, only ordering Itumbi not to publish information related to the case.

Itumbi was arrested on July 10, 2019, after being detained for seven days for his alleged involvement in publishing the controversial letter.

Investigations, including one by the FBI, reportedly showed that Itumbi was the one who published the letter on the internet.
