On the morning of July 22, 2019, a devastating fire swept through the offices of the finance and human resource departments in Kitui County, Kenya.
According to Kitui Central OCPD Abdi Waqo, the fire was reported at 2am and was quickly contained by the county's fire brigade. However, officers have secured the scene to investigate the cause of the blaze.
The fire destroyed a section of the office block housing the County finance office, the County records office, and the directorate of economic planning.
‘Fire experts are currently at the scene collecting forensic evidence to unravel the cause of the fire,’ said Waqo.
Deputy Governor Dr. Wathe Nzau confirmed that the County fire brigade had responded promptly to the incident and contained the fire, but the full extent of the damage was yet to be determined.
Dr. Nzau also stated that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had secured the scene and urged for speedy investigations into the cause of the fire.
Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu, who was out of the country on official duties, had been briefed on the incident, and Dr. Nzau assured the public that the Governor would issue a statement regarding the incident later in the day.
