On July 21, 2019, Marvel Studios announced 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' at the San Diego Comic-Con, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen set to star in the film. Director Scott Derrickson, who helmed the first 'Doctor Strange' movie, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that the sequel would explore the multiverse and its many dimensions.
According to Derrickson, 'Doctor Strange' will be facing villains from beyond his knowledge, leaving him in a position similar to that of the audience. The main antagonist in the movie is expected to be 'Nightmare,' a powerful entity from the comic books with the ability to harness people's fears and dreams.
Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch in the Disney+ series 'Wandvision,' is set to join the cast, with her role directly tied to the movie. However, it remains unclear whether Chiwetel Ejiofor's character, Baron Mordo, will return to face off against Doctor Strange in the sequel.
Despite the horror-based storyline, the movie is expected to be rated PG-13, allowing younger audiences to enjoy it. 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' is set to hit theaters on May 7, 2021.
