On July 21, 2019, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) CEO Robert Muthomi relinquished his position to allow investigations into accusations of abuse of office.

At the center of the allegations is the attempted sale of striker John Avire to an unnamed Egyptian club without the permission of Sofapaka, Avire's club.

According to Sofapaka president Elly Kalekwa, Muthomi, a former players' intermediary, was working towards selling the player illegally.

FKF announced plans to investigate the matter, with Muthomi agreeing to relinquish his duties, pending findings into the probe.

Avire's call-up to the national team was met with uproar as it came at the expense of more experienced players, including Allan Wanga and Jesse Were.

Avire went on to make two appearances for Harambee Stars against Tanzania and Senegal during the continental tournament.

FKF CEO Robert Muthomi stated in a letter that he did not want to influence the investigation process.

He termed the allegations as 'malicious' and expressed hope of resuming his duties as soon as he was cleared.
