On July 21, 2019, Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang'i spoke out against Deputy President William Ruto and his Tanga Tanga MPs for spreading false information about government projects.

According to Matiang'i, the MPs claim that certain projects are complete or underway when, in reality, they do not exist or are significantly behind schedule.

‘What the MPs tell me doesn’t tally because we have reports that say a dam is 80 per cent complete, and in some cases it doesn’t even exist, or a road is 40 per cent complete when it is probably 5 per cent complete as it were,’ Matiang’i said.

As the CS overseeing and supervising all government projects, Matiang’i has direct access to project records and has witnessed firsthand the discrepancies between the MPs’ claims and the actual state of affairs.

He pointed to Meru, where 213 national projects were listed, but many of which did not exist in reality.

‘I was in Meru four weeks ago where there are 213 national projects, in certain cases some that are reflected in our budget books that are being constructed just don’t exist, they are not there but they are reflected in the books that we spent resources on them and they are being built,’ he added.

Furthermore, Matiang’i alleged that funds have been lost due to the mismanagement of projects, citing Isiolo as an example where a dam was halted due to a lack of geo-technical survey.
