On July 21, 2019, a heated meeting at Nairobi Central Seventh Day Adventist Church turned violent, leaving Pastor Jean Pierre Maywa injured.
A video obtained by Nyakundi Report shows the church's head pastor being physically attacked by a group of church members.
According to eyewitnesses, the chaos broke out during a meeting to discuss the fate of a faction that wanted to split away from the church.
The rebel group, known as the Nairobi Cosmopolitan Conference (NCC), had recently lost a court case challenging the church's leadership.
Reconciliation talks were arranged to prevent a fallout, but they collapsed before they even started, with shouting matches and bitter exchanges dominating the talks.
Police were eventually called in to contain the situation, but they were unable to use tear gas canisters and had to convince the members to cancel the meeting.
