Wolves Defeat Manchester City in Premier League Asia Championship

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been crowned Premier League Asia champions after a thrilling match against Manchester City on July 20, 2019.

The Citizens were stunned by fellow EPL club Wolves 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw during regulation period at the Hongkou Football Stadium.

Wolves' goalkeeper Rui Patricio emerged as the hero of the match, saving three of City's penalties, while Ryan Bennett, Taylor Perry, and Ruben Vinagre all converted their spot kicks.

Nuno Espírito Santo's men came out on top in their debut appearance in the competition, beating the Citizens in a closely contested match.

Manchester City got off to a bright start, with Raheem Sterling firing an early shot, but Wolves' goalkeeper saved the ball. Aymeric Laporte's chance to convert a rebound was also denied by the goaltender.

Bayern Munich target Leroy Sane tried to mount pressure on the home team, but his effort was also denied. Wolves turned the tides around in their favour, trying to attack the Citizens, but once Ryan Bennett's header evaded Leander Dendoncker, the Etihad Stadium outfit almost punished them.

However, Sane's effort in front of the opponent's goal failed to find the target, and the referee sounded the final whistle, ending the match in a goalless draw.

Wolves stepped up their game in the penalty shootout, with Ryan Bennett, Taylor Perry, and Ruben Vinagre all converting their spot kicks, while Rui Patricio saved three of City's penalties, securing the win for Wolves.
