Published on July 20, 2019, the Meteorological department issued a warning about strong southerly winds expected to hit the Kenyan coast from Sunday.
According to the weather forecast, the winds may become even stronger on Monday, with speeds of up to 25 m/s experienced throughout the day.
Met officials stated, "The strong winds of 25 m/s and high waves of more than 3 meters are projected to continue to Tuesday, July 23. The strong winds are likely to reduce to 20 m/s on July 24, while the wave heights may reduce to 2 meters the same day."
Residents in Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, and Taita Taveta are on high alert, with the strong winds posing a risk of roofs being blown off, trees being uprooted, and structural damages.
For those living near the ocean, the winds may lower visibility, cause boats to capsize, and threaten the safety of those engaging in water sports and recreational activities.
Other areas that may experience the strong winds include Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Meru, Embu, Garissa, and Kitui. Residents in Makueni, Machakos, Southern Kajiado, and Tana River have also been advised to be on the lookout.
Met officials urge residents to continue listening to local media for updates, as advisories will be issued if conditions change significantly.
