On July 1, 2019, Antoine Griezmann finally completed his protracted move from Atletico Madrid to Barcelona, sparking a controversy that may end up in court.
According to reports, the Spanish Football Federation has opened a file on the move, which was first mooted last summer, after Barcelona claimed to have activated a clause in Griezmann's contract allowing him to leave for €120 million.
However, Atletico Madrid disputes this, alleging that Barcelona began negotiating with Griezmann as far back as March, which would entitle them to another €80 million due to a previous clause in his contract.
Barcelona has consistently denied any wrongdoing, with club president Josep Maria Bartomeu stating, 'I have spoken to them, but I do not think there is any proof, because there is no evidence of anything.'
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has also weighed in, saying that Barcelona's actions were a breach of contract.
Griezmann himself has expressed regret over the situation, stating, 'Regarding Atletico, it's a pity. I went to see them on purpose so they would not be caught off guard and could prepare for the future.'
