On July 20, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta officially launched the Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) plant in Marsabit County, marking a significant milestone in Africa's renewable energy sector.

The LTWP plant boasts an impressive 365 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 850 kilovolts, making it the largest wind farm in the continent.

With a total investment of $680 million, the project was undertaken through a public-private partnership and is expected to deliver 310 megawatts of clean energy to the national grid.

Deputy President William Ruto, Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, and foreign diplomats attended the ceremony, which highlighted the project's potential to transform the country's energy landscape.

According to LTWP project board Chairman Mugo Kibati, the project will have far-reaching benefits for Kenya, including reduced fuel imports and increased economic growth in the regions through which the transmission line passes.

Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has set up a 438km long transmission line to evacuate power from the Loiyangalani sub-station to Suswa in Narok County, connecting five counties to the national grid.
