On July 20, 2019, a tragic incident occurred in Karagita Estate, Naivasha, where a two-year-old child died in an informal day care centre under unclear circumstances.
The child's body was found on a bed in the estate, which is home to hundreds of flower farm workers. The estate has the highest number of day care centres, mostly run by elderly women without formal education.
According to Jane Wambui, a social worker, the child's mother had left the baby at the centre at around 6am. The woman responsible for the centre allegedly fed the minor before placing her on the bed.
Wambui expressed concerns about the high number of day care centres in the estate, stating that nearly all of them are illegal and the environment is unhygienic. She emphasized that in some centres, one woman cares for up to 20 children, calling for authorities to take swift action.
