On June 19, 2019, Algeria secured their first Africa Cup of Nations title since 1990 by defeating Senegal 1-0 in the final at the Cairo International Stadium in Egypt.
Baghdad Bounedjah scored the winning goal in the second minute after his snapshot strike took a deflection off Salif Sane, giving Algeria a 1-0 lead.
Senegal made two changes in their starting XI from the team that defeated Tunisia in the semi-finals, with Salif Sane replacing suspended Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly in the heart of Senegal's defence.
Despite Senegal's attempts to get back into the contest, Algeria's defence held strong, and even when Henri Saivet attempted a long-range strike, Algeria's goalie Rais M'Bolhi was on hand to save the danger.
Senegal were awarded a penalty for handball in the second half but it was overturned after a VAR review.
With 20 minutes left on the clock, Senegal came close again to draw level from Youssouf Sabaly's powerful strike from the edge of the box, but M'Bolhi was spot on to parry away the ball from the far post.
Senegal brought on striker Mbaye Diagne for midfielder Saivet with 15 minutes to go, but Algeria held on to keep off the Teranga Lions.
Algeria closed out the rest of the game to win their first title since 1990.
