On July 19, 2019, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard experienced his first defeat in a friendly match against Kawasaki in Yokohama, Japan.
Leandro Damiao, a Brazilian striker, scored the winning goal with just three minutes left in the match, securing a 1-0 victory for Kawasaki at the Nissan Stadium.
Despite the loss, Lampard's team showed promise, particularly midfielder Mason Mount, who impressed in the first half and caught the eye ahead of the new campaign.
Lampard started Mount in a midfield trio, and the 20-year-old midfielder delivered a strong performance in the first half, creating few clear-cut openings.
However, the introduction of Ross Barkley in the second half gave Chelsea's play some much-needed impetus, but Kawasaki's goalkeeper Shota Arai made several smart stops to thwart the visitors' attacks.
As the clock ticked down, Kawasaki sensed a famous win, with Damiao coming close to scoring twice, including a powerful header that hit the bar with five minutes remaining.
Chelsea's goalkeeper Willy Caballero produced a brilliant one-handed save to prevent a Kawasaki goal, but the visitors failed to heed the warning and from a resulting corner, Damiao was left unmarked at the far post to head home the winner.
