Published on July 19, 2019, Uber has condemned one of its drivers accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy in Mombasa.
The driver, 33-year-old Fredrick Mungai Njenga, allegedly forced the class 8 pupil into oral sex after locking him inside his taxi.
Uber termed the incident 'regrettable and shocking', stating that it 'has no place on the Uber app'. The company added that it takes any incident of this nature very seriously and immediately removes the driver's access from the app in such cases.
According to a statement by a spokesperson for the digital taxi company, 'This would be a clear violation of our community guidelines. We are in contact with law enforcement to assist their investigation in any way we can.'
Mr. Njenga was arraigned at the Shanzu Law Courts on Wednesday but did not take a plea after the court faulted the wording on the charge sheet. He was released on Ksh.50,000 cash bail and ordered to return to court on July 23 for plea taking.
