Published on July 18, 2019, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is expected to address soldiers at Nakasongola Military Barracks this evening, a move seen as an attempt to gauge his popularity within the soldiers and maintain his grip on the country's security forces.
The Ugandan President has been in power for over 30 years, making him one of the few remaining dictators in Africa. His regime has faced increasing opposition from the People Power party led by Bobi Wine, who has intensified his agitation to have President Museveni out of office.
President Museveni made stopovers in Kawempe, Matugga, and Luweero on his way to the barracks, a clear indication of his efforts to maintain his hold on power. The meeting is seen as a desperate attempt to prevent any instances of dissent among the soldiers.
