On July 18, 2019, Nairobi County health officials raided Tuskys on Kenyatta Avenue, seizing meat allegedly found to contain harmful additives.
According to sources, the County Health Inspectorate had purchased meat from the outlet earlier in the week and sent it for testing.
The test results confirmed the presence of large amounts of preservative Sodium Metabisulfite in the meat.
Following the raid, the county health department also shut down seven other meat outlets in Nairobi with similar test results.
The inspections are set to continue across the country, targeting all food outlets.
These actions follow a media report exposing the use of chemicals to make stale meat appear fresh in supermarkets and other meat vendors.
A laboratory test on a sample of meat sold at Naivas Supermarket in Machakos County had previously revealed the presence of a harmful additive.
