Kenya: 15% of Meat Samples in Nairobi Supermarkets Found Unfit for Human Consumption ¶
On July 16, 2019, Kenya's Ministry of Health collected samples from various meat markets in Nairobi to investigate the use of sodium metabisulfite in meat preservation.
According to the Ministry, 15% of the 40 samples collected contained excessive levels of sodium metabisulfite, making them unfit for human consumption.
The Ministry has ordered the closure of 255 meat markets where the contaminated meat was sold, and 28 people have been arrested for allegedly selling unfit meat.
Health Ministry spokesperson Sicily Kariuki announced that a comprehensive report on the matter would be released on August 6, 2019.
