On July 18, 2019, a tragic incident unfolded in Mai Mahiu, Naivasha, where a 68-year-old trader was brutally lynched by an irate mob.

The suspect, who operated a shop in Mafuta Taa center, 10kms from Mai Mahiu town, was accused of sexually abusing over ten minors in the last two months.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect would lure the minors with sweets and sodas before abusing them inside the shop.

One witness, James Gitahi, recounted the events leading up to the lynching, stating that the suspect had been living in the area for over 15 years without arousing suspicion.

Gitahi said that a mother searching for her daughter stumbled upon the suspect and the minor in a compromising situation, prompting her to raise the alarm.

As the crowd gathered, the suspect was dragged from the shop, half-naked and seriously beaten, before confessing to his sins.

Soon after, over ten minors, including two boys who had been sexually abused by the suspect, emerged, and the crowd decided to take the law into their own hands.

Naivasha deputy OCPD John Kwasa confirmed the incident, stating that the bodies were lying at Naivasha mortuary, and inquest files had been opened.

Separately, two passengers died in an accident involving a Nissan matatu and a lorry along the Mai Mahiu-Narok road.
