Kenyan long-distance runner Salome Jerono Biwott has been banned for eight years after she was found guilty of committing a second doping violation by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).

On April 2019, Jerono's urine sample tested positive for Norandrosterone, a banned substance by the World Anti-doping Agency (WADA), during the São Paulo International Marathon.

This is not Jerono's first doping offense. In 2012, she served a two-year period of ineligibility after traces of the same anabolic steroid Norandrosterone were found in a urine sample she provided at the Standard Chartered Marathon in Nairobi.

According to a statement by the AIU on Thursday, Jerono failed to respond to the charge by the given deadline of July 4, which deemed her to have admitted the Anti-Doping Rule Violations and accepted the consequences specified in the Notice of Charge.

As a result, Jerono will serve an eight-year period of ineligibility, commencing on June 5, 2019, and will also face disqualification of her results since April 7, 2019, with all resulting consequences, including the forfeiture of any titles, awards, medals, points, and prize and appearance money.

Jerono is not the only Kenyan runner to face anti-doping offenses. Other notable cases include World Championships 800 meters bronze medallist Kipyegon Bett, three-time Boston Marathon champion Rita Jeptoo, Rio 2016 marathon champion Jemima Sumgong, Asbel Kiprop, and World half-marathon record holder Abraham Kiptum.
