A tragic incident occurred at the Tullow Oil facility in Lokichar, Turkana North, where a police commander lost his life while detonating an explosive.

Commander Gabriel Wanjala, attached to the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (C.I.P.U), was part of a team of bomb experts tasked with destroying explosives used in the mining process.

However, the device he was handling went off prematurely, resulting in his death. Another man, who was also present, sustained serious injuries in the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, the ballistic experts failed to follow the necessary protocols and regulations for destroying the explosives, leading to the tragic outcome.

Residents of Lokichar have expressed their shock and grief over the loss of a well-respected officer who was known for his compassion and kindness.

"He has been a good officer and we had been used to him. When you're hungry, he could buy you food. We have lost a good friend. You could never tell that he was a police commander... He associated with everyone without discrimination," said John Koriken, a resident of Lokichar.
