Stockholm, Sweden, is set to host the Stockholm+50 international environment meeting, a significant event that will bring together global leaders to discuss pressing environmental issues. The meeting, which will be co-chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, is scheduled to take place on Thursday.

President Kenyatta's participation in the meeting is not only as a co-chair but also as a global champion on environmental matters. According to Ambassador Diana Kiambuthi, the Kenyan Ambassador to Sweden, President Kenyatta will be leading the Kenyan delegation to articulate Kenya's position on environmental issues, including climate change, nature, and biodiversity loss.

"It is very important for Kenya to be part of this dialogue, to be part of this meeting, to be able to articulate where we stand and of course to add a voice to the stakeholders who are going to deliberate on how to increase financing towards combating the challenges brought about by climate change," Ambassador Kiambuthi said.

The Stockholm+50 meeting is a commemoration of the first-ever international meeting on environment held in Stockholm in 1972, which led to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Kenya proudly hosts UNEP, and this meeting is an opportunity for the country to showcase its commitment to environmental conservation.

President Kenyatta's visit to Sweden will also involve bilateral meetings with other leaders, focusing on global action on climate change. The Kenyan Ambassador to Sweden noted that Kenya has enjoyed cordial bilateral relations with Sweden for many decades, receiving development assistance in various areas, including scholarship and social development.

However, in recent years, Kenya has shifted its policy focus from aid to trade, and Ambassador Kiambuthi highlighted the country's pursuit of economic diplomacy with Sweden. The two countries are also collaborating at the multilateral level and cooperating in the promotion of gender equality.
