On June 2, 2022, President Uhuru Kenyatta's ninth and final Madaraka Day celebrations were underway, marking the end of his second and final term in August. The event was broadcasted live by all major televisions in the country, but the live feed was provided by the State House media team.

As the presidential motorcade made its way along Lang'ata Road, a camera operator caught a glimpse of a billboard bearing the image of Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua. The camera zoomed in to bring a clear picture of the billboard, raising eyebrows among onlookers.

Supporters of Azimio la Umoja saw this as a sign that President Kenyatta would eventually hand over power to Raila. However, Deputy President William Ruto's supporters were quick to protest, accusing the State of using a national event to campaign for a certain candidate.
