On June 2, 2022, President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in Stockholm, Sweden, to co-chair the Stockholm+50 international environment meeting.

The two-day meeting, which began on June 2, 2022, is a commemoration of the first-ever international meeting on environment held in Stockholm in 1972, leading to the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Kenya proudly hosts UNEP, and President Kenyatta will lead the Kenyan delegation, articulating the country's position on environmental matters, including climate change, nature, and biodiversity loss.

According to Ambassador Diana Kiambuthi, the Kenyan Ambassador to Sweden, President Kenyatta's participation in the meeting is crucial for Kenya to add its voice to the stakeholders deliberating on how to increase financing towards combating climate change challenges.

Stockholm+50 comes between the 5th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5.2) held in Nairobi earlier this year and the 2022 UN Oceans Conference, which Kenya and Portugal will co-host in Lisbon from June 27 to July 1.

During his visit, President Kenyatta will also chair a special high-level segment on 'the road to Lisbon' for the Oceans Conference and hold bilateral meetings with other leaders focusing on global action on climate change.
