Russians Advance on Severodonetsk as Kyiv Awaits New US Weapons

May 31, 2022 - Russian forces have made significant gains in the eastern Ukraine city of Severodonetsk, with Ukrainian forces withdrawing to prepared positions.

According to Lugansk region governor Sergiy Gaiday, the Russians control 70 percent of Severodonetsk. Ukrainian forces are actively resisting the Russian advance, but the situation remains dire.

US President Joe Biden has confirmed that the US will send advanced rocket systems, including the Himars multiple launch rocket system, to Ukraine. This move is seen as a significant boost to Kyiv's defense, allowing Ukrainian forces to strike further behind Russian lines.

However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has accused Washington of 'adding fuel to the fire', saying that such supplies do not encourage Kyiv to resume peace talks.

Despite the challenges ahead, Ukrainian forces remain determined to defend their country. As one Ukrainian fighter on the frontline said, 'If you know you have a heavy weapon behind you, everyone's spirits rise.'

Meanwhile, the European Union has imposed unprecedented economic sanctions on Moscow, and Germany has announced plans to deliver an air defense system capable of shielding a major city from Russian air raids.

However, the situation remains complex, with Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24 having killed thousands of people and sent millions fleeing. The conflict also risks triggering a global food crisis, with Ukraine's grain exports likely to be severely impacted.

As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the people of Ukraine remain resilient and determined to defend their country.
