On June 1, 2022, Gor Mahia celebrated their victory in the Madaraka Day Cup, a prestigious football tournament in Kenya.

The team, led by captain Philemon Otieno, edged out their arch-rivals AFC Leopards in a thrilling penalty shootout, winning 6-5.

The match, held at the Nyayo Stadium, was attended by thousands of fans donning green and blue jerseys, the colors of the two teams.

President Uhuru Kenyatta led the country in marking the 59th Madaraka Day celebrations at the newly refurbished Uhuru Gardens, while Sports CS Amina Mohammed represented the government, which promised a Sh1 million prize money to the winning team.

However, President Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga were not present at the match.

Austin Odhiambo was the hero of the day, scoring the winning goal in the penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 in regular time.

Collins Shivachi gave Leopards a narrow 1-0 halftime lead, but Odhiambo equalized for Gor Mahia in the second half.
