On Wednesday, Gor Mahia, the record champions of the Kenya Premier League, solidified their position as the top team in the league by defeating AFC Leopards 6-5 in a penalty shootout at the Nyayo National Stadium. The match was part of the Madaraka Day celebrations.
The 95th Mashemeji derby, a highly anticipated match between the two teams, ended in a 1-1 draw during regulation time. Collins Shivachi scored for AFC Leopards, while Gor Mahia leveled the score in the second half due to a defensive error by Leopards' goalkeeper Levis Opiyo.
Dr. Amina Mohamed, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, presided over the match. The winning team, Gor Mahia, took home Sh1 million, while AFC Leopards received Sh500,000.
The match was free of charge for fans, and it came just three weeks after the top-flight return leg, which was played at Kasarani Stadium, ended in a 1-1 draw.
