On Wednesday morning, police conducted a surprise search at Vihiga Boys High School, seizing illicit drugs and other substances from students as they returned from their half-term break.

According to the police, the search was conducted by the Nyanza Region K-9 team, using sniffer dogs to detect hidden items.

Outgoing Board of Management chairman Shera Didi confirmed the incident, but declined to provide further details, citing his preparation to hand over to a new head.

The seized items included five rolls of bhang, unidentified yellow tablets concealed in an exercise book, packets of pancakes, cans of peanut butter, and baked soya beans.

The police stated that the search was part of a new partnership between schools and the National Police Service, aimed at enhancing school security and preventing the smuggling of drugs and contraband.

“The search followed an invitation by the school principal to complement the school’s security personnel in screening for drugs, contraband, and other dangerous instruments,” the police said.

Some of the items seized were concealed in restricted food items, but were detected by the sniffer dogs.

Members of the K-9 Police Unit are stationed across counties and sub-counties, providing support to schools and communities.
