On Madaraka Day, June 1, 2022, President Uhuru Kenyatta took center stage, leaving his deputy William Ruto and Azimio La Umoja Flag Bearer Raila Odinga in the shadows.

The celebrations began early morning, but it wasn't until noon that Uhuru arrived at Uhuru Gardens, where he gave awards and delivered his speech.

Notably, Uhuru's speech marked the first time he commented on the nomination of Martha Karua as Raila's running mate, describing her as 'on the verge of making history.'

"We have a chance of electing a woman and shattering the glass ceiling by assuming the second-highest office in the Republic of Kenya," Uhuru said.

Despite the notable absence of Ruto and Raila, the President found time to praise female government officials and civilians who have made exemplary efforts in their duties.

Among those recognized were Fatumah Ahmed, the first female Major General in the Kenya Defence Force, and Chief Justice Martha Koome.

Uhuru also crowned females serving in the military with the most coveted presidential award, including Ms Nyariki Alice Kwamboka and Ms Mwangi Jane Nduta.
