On June 1, 2022, a fire ravaged a house in Manyani estate, Nakuru East sub-county, resulting in the deaths of three family members.
According to Nakuru East sub-county Deputy Police Commander Wilson Nduati, residents reported a house fire in the Manyani slums, prompting authorities to respond.
After extinguishing the fire, police discovered that a mother and her two daughters had perished in the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but some residents speculate it might have been caused by an electrical fault.
Deputy Police Commander Nduati stated, 'The three were burnt beyond recognition. We have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire. The bodies of the three were moved to the Nakuru municipal mortuary.'
The family's 19-year-old son, Kenan Muchemi, who recently completed high school, is now the sole surviving member. He escaped the tragedy as he was no longer living with his mother and siblings.
Mr. Muchemi lives with his cousins in a neighboring estate and occasionally visits his family. He learned of the tragedy upon arrival and joined the rescue efforts, only to discover that his family had perished.
'My mother Judy Nyambura and my two sisters Shadiya Wangare, 17, and Limsy Wanjiru, 11, were in the house. I did not even have the strength to view the bodies,' said the distraught teenager.
Neighbors, including Kennedy Otieno and George Karanja, attempted to extinguish the fire using water from a construction site, but their efforts were hindered by the spread of the fire.
