On June 1, 2022, a controversy erupted at the Kilimanjaro Hotel in Nairobi's CBD, following allegations of racial discrimination against a customer.
A female customer, identified as Gladly Nelly, claimed on her Facebook account that she was treated rudely by the hotel's waiters and asked to leave a table reserved for an Arab man and his 4-year-old daughter.
The incident sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for the hotel to be held accountable for the alleged racial discrimination.
However, the hotel management denied the allegations, stating that the table was indeed reserved for the Arab man and his child, and that they were unaware of the reservation tag on the table.
The hotel management also claimed to have CCTV footage that proves their innocence and the waiters' innocence.
Despite the hotel's apology and request for Nelly to take down her post, she refused, leading the hotel to take legal action against her for wrongful accusations of racism, defamation, and threatening their employees.
The hotel claims that Nelly's false accusations have resulted in a significant loss of customers and revenue in the past week.
