Manchester United announced that French World Cup-winning midfielder Paul Pogba will leave the club at the end of June, marking the end of his second spell.

At 29 years old, Pogba's departure comes as his contract expires, with the club set to recoup none of the then-record £89 million ($112 million) they paid for him when they acquired him from Juventus in 2016.

New manager Erik ten Hag has decided that Pogba's chances at Manchester United have come and gone, paving the way for a potential return to Juventus, where he won four Serie A titles, or a move to Paris Saint-Germain, who are due for an overhaul and built around fellow World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe.

Manchester United's decision to part ways with Pogba is part of a broader effort to refresh the team, which has struggled to regain its former glory since Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

Pogba initially flourished under Jose Mourinho, helping the team win the League Cup and Europa League in 2017, but his subsequent performances rarely matched those he produced for France in their 2018 World Cup campaign.

Although he showed glimpses of his talent in the 2021 Europa League final, Pogba's inconsistent displays had frustrated fans, who booed him off the pitch when he was substituted in a victory over Norwich in April.

"The club can announce that Paul Pogba will leave Manchester United at the end of June, upon the expiry of his contract," read the club statement.
