On June 1, 2022, President Uhuru Kenyatta led Kenyans in the Madaraka Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens, but a notable absence was that of his Deputy, William Ruto.
Traditionally, the Deputy President is invited to address the nation, followed by the President, who then delivers the keynote speech. However, this year's ceremony saw a break from this tradition.
Immediately after an interlude of entertainment, President Kenyatta invited President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone to make his remarks, without giving Deputy Ruto a chance to speak.
Furthermore, President Kenyatta failed to acknowledge Deputy Ruto's presence when introducing the VIP guests in attendance.
President Kenyatta's speech also made it clear that he does not support Deputy Ruto's presidential bid, as he endorsed Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua as his preferred choice for Kenya's next Deputy President.
President Kenyatta reiterated his commitment to expanded inclusion of women in leadership, stating, 'I am proud to be part of this push and Kenyans have the opportunity to elect the first female Deputy President. If it is the wish of Kenyans, come August 9, 2022, we will have the first female Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya.'
Martha Karua is the running mate of ODM leader Raila Odinga in the August 9 General Election under the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition.
