The government is exploring ways to increase the adoption of the electronic payment system on the Nairobi Expressway.
Infrastructure Principal Secretary Paul Maringa revealed plans to integrate mobile money payment into the system, aiming to boost efficiency and reduce waiting times at toll terminals.
The proposed changes include lowering the toll card prices from Ksh2,000 to Ksh300, with the goal of discouraging cash payments and encouraging drivers to use the Manual Toll Card or Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) service instead.
According to PS Maringa, the electronic payment system offers several benefits, including faster transaction times. He stated, "It takes three seconds to use the card while it takes 45 seconds to use other modes of payment like a credit card. It even takes longer while paying cash."
Additionally, the government is working on allowing cardholders to use their cards to pay for products and services at places like gas stations and supermarkets.
As part of the restructuring plans, new exits will be constructed to connect the Green Park Terminus and Haile Selassie Avenue, as well as the Nyayo House roundabout, making access to the Central Business District easier.
