On June 1, 2022, tragedy struck the Coast region when Rabai MP William Kamoti died in a car crash on the Malindi-Mombasa route, just hours after being approved by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to reclaim his post.
According to Kilifi ODM branch chair and Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire, the family has decided that Kamoti's younger brother, Mohamed Mdigo Mwamlare, will run for the position on an Orange Democratic Movement ticket.
"After the IEBC approval procedure, the family and ODM have decided on Mohamed Mdigo Mwamkale as our nominee," Mwambire added.
The decision comes after politicians from the Coast region called on the ODM to substitute Kamoti with a relative, citing the precedent set by the replacement of Imran Okoth for Ken Okoth and Issah Juma Boy for his late brother Boy Juma Boy in the Senate.
"Kamoti has left behind brothers, Gideon Hare and Mdigo Mwamkale and one of them should be given that chance to continue the work Kamoti started in ODM," said Cantona Mwadena, a member of the Rabai Kisurutini Member of County Assembly (MCA).
