Alchemist License Suspended Amid Racism Allegations ¶
On May 31, 2022, Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu suspended the license of Alchemist bar in Westlands, Nairobi, amid reports of racism.
The move comes after a viral video showed blacks and Europeans lining up in different queues at the club, sparking outrage on social media.
According to reports, 10 Alchemist officials had been arrested and arraigned by the time of the suspension.
Reacting to the suspension, some Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) felt that it was commendable but unfortunate that the county management waited until there was a public uproar to take action.
Others questioned the move, citing a potential conflict of interest, as Governor Kananu has admitted to owning entertainment joints in Nairobi.
Some users also felt that the suspension was a justified move, with one user stating, 'Ann Kananu has redeemed herself.'
Another user questioned the noise pollution charge added to the club's woes.
Alchemist, a popular club in Westlands, had earlier distanced itself from the racist incident despite a public apology.
However, the club's management later argued that there was one main entrance to the venue and that the video shared by a private individual was misleading.
