Musician Kaz Defends The Alchemist Amid Racist Allegations

On June 1, 2022, the Nairobi County Government suspended the operating license of The Alchemist Bar following allegations of racism.

Activist, musician, and podcaster Karen Lucas, popularly known as Kaz, has come to the defence of the establishment. In a statement on her Instagram account, Kaz lamented about the loss of jobs and the impact on the community.

“The number of jobs lost, hungry homes, and loss Alchemist has had to suffer at the hands of keyboard bullies is just dispeakable! You have no idea how powerful your phones are till you’re responsible for all the mouths that go hungry from your actions,” Kaz said.

She also encouraged people to use their power of activism wisely, saying, “Yes we can all be activists but use your power wisely. Look what you’ve done Shame Shame on you!!”

This is not the first time Kaz has defended an establishment accused of alleged racism. In 2019, she came to the defence of J’s Fresh Bar and Restaurant when they were also accused of alleged racism.

The Nairobi County Government has directed the county executive committee member for environment to institute a multiagency task force and a comprehensive report on the allegations within the next five days.
